Common Questions:

Interview questions can be divided broadly into the following categories:
1. Based on school syllabus
2. Personal questions

Based on your interests and hobbies

Based on your career goals

Personal (family related)



3. General Knowledge questions
4. Hypothetical questions

About Hobbies:

If your hobby is painting, then you should know at least the name of various type of paintings and the basic difference between them.

If you hobby is classical dance you should know the various forms of classical dance.

If your hobby is western dance you should know various forms of dance available like salsa, tango etc

If your hobby is reading novels you should be aware of few good novelist, prize, Indian novelist etc.

Now a days T 20 is the new concept in cricket. If you are saying cricket as your favourite game, then you should be able to answer a question “ which format u like most – test / one day / T20). As said previously, interview goes normally in the way you let it go or the way you want it to go.

You should not tell interviewer the long list of your interests as this will give them wide scope of questions.



The best way to prepare for such questions is to think about three of your hobbies/interest, or anything you are passionate about. And then try to answer questions as mentioned above.



Based on your career goals:
What you want to be is a very important question and you should be very clear regarding the same. It is not like that you should choose a field from engineering or medical line only. You can select any field, whichever you like social service, army, painter, novelist, architect, historian, lawyer etc. The only thing is that you should be able to answer the following questions:

Why you want to become say doctor?

What it is about?

How can you contribute to the nation?

What are the things you like about this job?

What are the things you dislike about this job?



Common questions asked in the NTSE Interview

Q 1: Tell me something about yourself.: (Your answer should be brief and focused)

Q 2: What are your hobbies?: (Your hobby should be specific – your hobby should not be "watching TV", but it should be watching discovery channel or sports channel etc. Your hobby should be specific and clear. In case your hobby is visiting new places and traveling, then you are inviting lots and lots of questions about geography, history, physical and chemical processes).

Q 3: Which is your favourite subject?: (Whichever subject you choose, go through the NCERT book of class VIII and class IX again – few chapters, if your IX class have been already started..) In case you are interested in History, Geography or any subject like that, there is no harm in proposing that subject as your favourite subjects. NTSE is not only for science students.)

Q 4: Who is your favourite teacher and questions related to the subject that particular teacher teaches?:

Q 5: What is your aim?: (Your answer should also explain why you have selected it as your aim)

Q 6: How you would be able to serve our country by being that?

Q7: What are your strongest points?

Q 8: What are your weak points?: (Even if you have weak point, then you should not declare it as if you are really weak. Everyone has some weakness, so to focus on your weak points should not be your concern. The answer should be such that you admitting that no one is perfect, but any weak point is not good enough to stop you to accept challenges!!) technically speaking the weakest point comes from your strongest point.

Q 9: If your hobby is any particular game, then what are the various laws of the game?

Q 10: Name 2-3 favourite players of National and International level. If your favorite game is cricket, then style / technique of the player should be the reason of you choosing any favourite player of yours. A technical explanation will give you an edge.

Q 11: Apart from being good in academics, in what other activities you participate in your school?

Q 12: If you get NTSE Scholarship, how you will use the money?
(Some student says that they will put in a bank to be used during higher studies. You decide what you will say.)

Q 13: How many hrs you study daily? What is your daily schedule?

Q 14: Define Democracy (based on current affairs).

Q 15: Apart from school books, do you study any other book / magazine?

Q 16: How you prepared for the NTSE Exam?
(Do not mention the name of coaching institute as such)

Q 17: Tell me something about your parent’s job. Who is your role model?

Q 18: Anything you would like to ask from us (at the end of the interview)
(If you ask anything, your question should be very clear).

Prepare your answer keeping these points in mind:

Do not feel nervous. Getting nervous brings your performance down.

If you don’t know anything, reply “no” politely/calmly. Do not say wrong things (or a blunder). If you are putting your guess, then you can say that Sir, I feel….

You should be in a calm and confidant mood.

Interviewer is well aware of the fact that a 8th class student can be very intelligent but normally not matured enough to tackle pressure.

Sometimes interviewer intentionally asks you some questions which are certainly not a part of your course. The Interviewer just wants to see your approach and not the formulas. Interviewer wants to see, how specifically you study. You should analyse and propose your solution with your current level of knowledge.

There can be infinite questions so you can not prepare for each and every question. You have to be mentally strong and confident to face the interview.

Lot of students tells astronomy as their favourite subject or astronomer as their aim. If choosing astronomy, then be prepared for some tough question session.

Do not argue with the interviewer. There exist lot of difference between arguments and discussion.



Most important thing:

Be Confident and Be positive.

What all preparations you have done for the Interview?

What are known as suicidal bags of cell ?

What do you mean by Globalisation?

What is the difference between various types of rocks and give example of each ?

Which plateau in India is made of sedimentary rocks ?

Mention 5 rivers each of central highlands and deccan plateau. How these rivers are different from the rivers of the Gangetic plain?

What is the role of Nehru in freedom of India ?

What was the role of Rajendra Prasad and Nehru in framing the constituion?

Give the achievements of Akbar, Sher Shah Suri , Aurangzeb, Cholas, Shah Jahan ?

Questions about various social organisations and there role during indian independence movement like the Brahmo Samaj

Problems from Maths and various puzzles

You should know various definition in maths like integers, rational numbers, composite numbers, prime numbers and their properties.

How we convert one form of energy into another? Can heat energy be converted to electric energy ?

How does desert cooler cool the room during summer ? How it is related to humidity?

What is heat ? What is the difference between heat and energy?

What is difference between heat and temperature ?

What is pressure and how it is different from force and stress

Give one example of reflection and one example of refraction in the room and the effect

What are resources and its various types. According to you which resources you consider most important and why?

What is sound? Does frequency is associated with only sound waves?

Cna you calculate the frequency of the needle of the watch? Calculate for all the three.

Why Sky is blue in day and black in nite but leaves are always green?

How can a mixture of sand, common salt and camphor be separated.

What is the difference between ionosphere and troposphere? How ionosphere is related to ozone layer?

How do we measure the age of the rock and that of the earth as well?

India does not have much Uranium and therefore we have to depend on Uranium supplying countries for power generation. does nuclear power can be produced strictly by uranium only?

How do you separate sulphur from a mixture of iron and sulphur ? How you will separate camphir and dry ice?

What are alloys ? Why alloys cannot be called Solution ? What is the main difference between elements and alloys? What are the characteristic of the alloys?

What is a mixture? Gives its types and the exmaples

What is valency ? What can be the maximum valency

What is specific gravity? Can it be less than 1?

Give one example of electromagnetic wave

What is the wavelength of the visible light? What is audible frequency? Like bats can hear much more than what we can, similarly some organism can see what we cannot see?

What is Solution? Can you prepare solutions of 5 types given from the various objects present on your table right now?

Write electronic configuration of Na and Cl.

What are acids and bases ? Name any two acids which you can find easily in your home

What is the relation between charge and current? If you carry a charge with you does it means current is flowing?

Define Physics and Chemistry. What is Biology? What is study of cells known as?

Do you have invertor in your home? The battery of invertor has which acid?

How you will differentitate between metals and non metals

If you want to prepare electricity using turbine at power plant, which would be your favourite process - evaporation or boiling? and why?

Just go through the first few chapters of class IX and no need to go through the remaining IX and X class syllabus.Be at your best!
